5 Weeks of Wins for CCB PDF Print E-mail
Written by Sean Langford

This continues to be another remarkable season for CCB.

Lake Sunnapee was an excercise in teamwork and raw skill as Mark Hagen and Barry Grenier fought to seal the victory, putting Mark in the top spot for the victory in the Men's 55+ category. Ciaran Mangan also took the top spot in the Men's 35+ category with help from Tyler Monroe, Paul Richard, Leo Develian and Sean Langford. Karin Holmes also brought in an impressive 4th place against the women's p123 field. Karl Hembrect also finished with power in a nice 7th place in the Men's 45+ field. The Syracuce Race Weekend brought a podium spot for new CCB'er James Morrison who took a second place in both the Road Race and the Criterium putting him in second for GC. Then just as the trees filled out their foliage, the CCB racers brought their fitness to bear on the criterium races. The first big criterium weekend in New England is Memorial Day weekend, which brought us the Cyclonauts Racers Criterium on the venerable Stafford Springs speedway. George Adams took an impressive 5th place in a stacked 50+ mens field, with teammates Mark Hagen, Mike Pavlov, and Karl Hembrect also taking placings despite a somewhat chaotic finish. Ciaran Mangan also managed a 5th place finish in the Men's 35+ race even after bending his chainring somehow during the race(!) The Hartford Downtown Criterium brought in another victory for Ciaran Mangan in the Men's 35+ race causing other teams to begin wondering "Can this man possibly be stopped?". Also an impressive 3rd place finish for Ciaran in the P123 race which followed. Paul Richard landed an impressive 4th place finish in the 40+ field with Karl taking a nice 4th place finish as well in the 50+ race. Barry Boyce also rounded out the top 10 with a nice 9th place finish in the Men's 60+ field. The Lake Auburn Road Race brought extreme conditions for our racers with a lightning storm and heavy rains during the first half of the day. This did not deter Paul Richard from overcoming the conditions and the competition to earn an impressive first place win in the Men's 35+ field. Jon Bernard also found a podium spot with a well deserved 3rd place finish after bringing in a breakaway. Karin Holmes fought the worst of the storms and got a 4th place finish in the Women's P123 field. Karl Hembrect and Tommy Mannion worked together to get top 10 results finishing 7th and 8th respectively in the Men's 45+ field. The Balloon Festival was a battle of attrition in the jungle-like weather conditions in upstate New York where James Morrison took a fantastic 1st place win in the Men's 3 field. Ciaran Mangan continues an impressive 2008 campaign with a win in the 30+ race. The Mystic Velo Criterium saw the pink and blue in the top podium spot with Mark Hagen taking the win in the Men's 55+ field. Mike Pavlov and Karl Hembrect worked together well in the Men's 45+ race to finish 4th and 7th respectively. The Waterville Valley Time Trial is where Tyler Monroe brought in a win for CCB with the fastest time in the Men's 45+ division despite the brutally hot conditions. Paul Richard sailed in for a 3rd place finish in the Men's 35+ and James Nash also collected a 3rd place finish in the Men's 45+ field. Karen Nash brought in a great 3rd place finish in the Women's Cat3 field and Neil Fagel sailed in for a nice 6th placing in the Men's 45 field. Here is a quick note from Ciaran:

This was a great weekend for CCB - Pucci has free altitude tents for all winners. What a guy :)

It's great to look at BikeReg every Monday and see how we look as a team, and I think the results speak for themselves. It's often just those that come in first that get the congratulatory calls, but often the people who deserve the most credit finish further down the field.

I would especially like to thank Tyler Munroe, Paul Richard, Leo Devellian and Sean Langford for all the help they have given me this season- I could not have won the races I did without them. At the Hardford crit, Tyler and Paul went to the front with a lap and a half to go to bring back the break and to give me the lead out. Sunapee was similar, with Sean Langford covering some early moves and Leo Tyler and Paul covering everything else throughout the race. It is a long season yet, so I hope I can repay you guys in some races later in the year.

CCB Results from Bear Mountian and Sterling PDF Print E-mail

Bear Mountain is a tough 56 mile road race featuring a picturesque loop through a collection of access roads in the Harriman State Forest in upstate New York. However, it was not a New York team to take the win in the Men's 35+ but instead was CCB's own Ciaran Mangan who continues to collect wins in 2008. CCB's Dan Cassidy also had a strong finish placing in the money with a 6th place finish in the P/1/2 field after a great finish the day prior at Sterling.

The 14th Annual Sterling Road Race also saw some strong finishes including a podium finish from CCB's Dan Cassidy finishing 3rd. Also rounding out the top 10 are Karin Holmes finishing 4th in the Women's 3/4 field, Paul Richard with a 4th in the M35, Randall Levere with a 9th place finish in the Men's 4/5 race and Jon Bernard finishing 10th in the Men's 3/4 field.

Podium results: Jiminy Peak and Blue Hills PDF Print E-mail

CCB would like to recognize the podium finishes of James Morrison finishing 2nd in the Category 3 race at the Jiminy Peak Road Race on Saturday, and James Nash finishing 2nd in the Men's 45 at the Blue Hills Road Race on Sunday. Here's a race report from James Nash:

Gearworks had a full team - maybe eight of them - and rode tempo (yes, all of them) for two laps of four. I attacked after the first lap, but they continued the eight-man rotation at the front, so, no-go. Paula (yes Paula) McNamara attacked on the hill at the end of the first lap. That strung things out for a bit, and a few of us worked it really hard. I looked back after taking a pull and estimated about 20 or so in the group. That must hae been the split. Nice work, Paula. (she is such a stud) About a mile into the last lap Pat McNamara (Pat is a very good friend I used to travel to ski races with, a seriously strong bike racer and Paula's husband) attacked and a Gearworks (Borrello) and a Landry's guy went with him. I bridged up and the four of us worked the break. I was the strongest in the break, and Pat and Gearworks sensed it, because no one was coming around anymore with two miles to go. I backed down to tempo and lead up the first pitch of the finish-hill. Gearworks attacked hard. I looked at Pat and he was shaking his head and mumbling something that indicated he wasn't up for chasing. I accelerated and dropped the Landry's guy in the process, but Pat was able to hang on. We caught Gearworks about 500 yds from the finish and rested a bit. Pat attacked and told me to get on his wheel. I couldn't get around him, but was very satisfied just the same. (The rain rinsed all the pollen out of the air - what a difference!)
